Dear Member of Ontario Central:

We have been remiss in taking care of purebred dogs. Our purebreds are being attacked from the outside, with hostile Breed Specific Legislation, and from within, from a seemingly uncaring CKC head office and an increasingly unsympathetic Dogs in Canada.

The board of directors, representing “some 24000 or so members at any given month” must change how we do business within the walls of the CKC offices. This building and its’ employees are here for one purpose, “To serve the membership of our organization and no other”.

We have watched as head office has become a “political cow”, with self-serving management at the upper levels. How can an efficient business be run with one manager to every six employees?

Why do we no longer have a magazine that is a member’s publication? One where we can advertise, read, and submit articles that pertained to our sport of purebred dogs? The magazine caters to Walmart and its other advertisers, ignoring our members who go to other publications to advertise.

We have already seen the CKC fail to convince legislators that Breed Specific Legislation does not work. Already two of our purebreds are banned in Ontario. What breeds will be added? Will “Docking and Cropping” laws be next? We must educate the public and legislators and be proactive in these matters. Otherwise governments will listen to the strident organizations such as PETA etc. Why are we not initiating more proactive measures? Who else will protect our beloved friends – our dogs?

Why do we ignore the plight of the official event giver? The CKC has encumbered them with more and more rules and regulations? As one of the people who has helped put on such events, I know the frustrations clubs endure. Venues for our events are becoming scarce, and much more expensive. Where is the presence of the CKC at our shows? Why is our booth not being used?

What happened to the statement that used to appear on each and every page of letterhead: “For the betterment of purebred dogs”. This is our sport. Are we not proud enough to say so?

Having attended many board meetings over the years as a member, I am saddened by the fact that the gallery is always so small. Why has the club become so unimportant to the average member, and how do we bring the passion that we have for our dogs back to the CKC?

Our Library has always meant a great deal to me, as a volunteer on the library committee. We have the potential for a first class archives and library. People have generously donated books, artwork and collections. Yet it is disorganized and basically unavailable to the membership. We need to have some of our very valuable books taken care of and identified by a qualified antique and rare book person. There are many members with valuable items that would dearly love to donate to this organization, but we must insure that it is cared for properly.

Our job, as directors and Canadian Kennel Club members must be to encourage pride in and concern for our venerable organization. It has served us well for over a century…it is up to us to serve it.

I ask for your vote for Director of Ontario Central (Zone 7)

Respectfully,

Allan Pepper
